Sophie is in the last term of Year 11. She's used to moving around with her accountant father and free-spirited mother, so the move to a small town on the South Coast in NSW doesn't seem too out of the ordinary - at first.
But things are changing around Sophie. A new school means a new start - and she's tired of her mother's superstitions and control. When she's recruited to the ranks of the school's popular girls, Sophie seizes the opportunity to remake herself... and unleashes forces a lot more threatening than whether she can hide her true nerd nature from the high school bitch brigade.
As Sophie negotiates teenage preoccupations with overprotective parents, whether her pyjamas are cool enough for a sleepover and the school-ground politics of secrets, lies and faithless boyfriends, something dark is hovering on the edge of her vision. The school Goth delivers her an ominous warning, strange birds seem to be following her... and fate keeps reuniting her with the dangerous bad boy with a past that nobody wants to talk about: Brody Meine.
Violent storms suddenly erupt, windows explode in the classroom, and a fire engulfs an entire street. And all these escalating, demonic happenings seem to take place when Sophie and Brody Meine are together...

Burnt Snow. How to start, how to start? Well, how about I say that it's so totally, freaking awesome, that I could not put it down! It could have been the end of the world and I wouldn't have known. The story is told from sixteen year old, Sophie's point of view. She's moved around quite a bit in her life. Now she's in Yarrindi. She's a bit of nerd, and has been cosseted a fair bit by her parents. Once she's arrived in Yarrindi she meets a seriously hot guy serving ice cream, that her mother warns her away from immediately. She doesn't understand her mothers strange behaviour and is completely embarassed by her actions. Then on her first day of school she is invited in to the popluar group. Of course she thinks this is fantastic and tries, at first, to really fit in. The girls are rather cliche with their shallow personalities, obsession with their looks and rather dull conversationalists. All they seem to talk about are boys, fashion, boys, gossip and boys. Then she sees the hot guy from the icecreamery, and gets told by her new friends to avoid him as well. Sophie is, of course, drawn to Brody Meine like a moth to a flame. The boy is hot, mysterious and has a reputataion for being the local 'bad boy'. As she starts to get to know him, things start to happen. Strange, scary things. There's a nosebleed, smashed windows and fire. Sophie begins to realise these things are happening whenever she's with Brody. Her parents are acting weird, with her mother giving her vague warnings that really confuse her. She doesn't understand her mothers hostility to Brody, and she finds herself lying to her mother about him. Sophie's character really changes throughout the book, growing and learning who she is. I liked her from the start, but she's rather naive, and starts her to feel her parents have been a little too overprotective. There are a few tantrums when she's trying to evade their influence over her life, but they stop almost as soon as they begin. Her friends have deeper personalities that you originally believe and I found myself warming to them a bit more. The there's the chemistry between Sophie and Brody which is pretty explosive, literally. She knows he's bad for her but she just can't help having feelings for him and defying everyone and everything to be with him. On the outside Brody seems cold, but you see the undercurrents of his personality and know that there is so much more to him than meets the eye. I challenge him to face down every fictional guy character. Edward who? Patch, never heard of him. Dimitri....doesn't sound familiar.
Brody is aloof from everyone else but around Sophie he's a little more open. Although not much in the beginning. But as the book progresses we find out more about him, but still not enough to loose that mysterious vibe. In the meantime she's had to deal with the local Goth girl whose been telling her strange things, and that there are bad people called Finders, out there who want to hunt her down and harm her for what she is.
She goes to Sydney and something bad happens to one of her old friends and Sophie transforms. Afterwards realizes that she is different. She confronts her mother who tells her about their family, and how she and her grandmother are witches. Sophie always thought her mother was just a hippie, and that her grandmother has been teaching her small things throughout her childhood. Sophie comprehends who she is and begins to try and sort out all the strange things that have been going on around her. Brody believes he's bad luck and that everything that has happened is his fault. While they're stuck in a cave waiting out a storm they really come to see their feelings for each other and Sophie explains to him what she is. Whilst in the cave the Finders kidnap them. They've been in Yarrindi and believe Brody is the on they want. The Finders are crazy and want to eat Brody to absorb his power. The ending is full on, with Sophie trying to save herself, Brody and her friend from the fight between her mother and the Goth girl against the Finders. She won't abandone them otherwise she's no better than the Finders. When she understands her mother doens't share the same opinion, she pits herself against her mother. She's then thrown through darkness and ends up somewhere else. That's how the book ends. Rather frustrating actually. Burnt Snow is 679 pages long and is chock full of so much action, teen angst, understanding, sexual chemistry and just plain awesomeness. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an electifying and exhilarating read. I assure you, you won't be disappointed if you do. I have to give it 5.5/5. I received this book from Pan Macmillan. (Thankyou)

    Purchase Information:

John Smith is not your average teenager. He regularly moves from small town to small town. He changes his name and identity. He does not put down roots. He cannot tell anyone who or what he really is. If he stops moving those who hunt him will find and kill him. But you can't run forever. So when he stops in Paradise, Ohio, John decides to try and settle down. To fit in. And for the first time he makes some real friends. People he cares about - and who care about him. Never in John's short life has there been space for friendship, or even love. But it's just a matter of time before John's secret is revealed. He was once one of nine. Three of them have been killed. John is Number Four. He knows that he is next ...

I finally got a copy of I Am Number Four. It was well worth the wait. It begins with the death of number three. Then we meet Number four, whose new name is John Smith. He has had to move to Paradise, Ohio with his guardian Henri. Henri has been with John for ten years and is more like a father to him. Henri also has to teach John about his Legacies, which are powers that will appear to help him in his fight against the peoples who destroyed his home planet. John and Henri are always ready to leave a moments notice. John has always stuck to the fringes when in school, never making any real friends. I really liked John's strength, courage and loyalty. He is also confident, but never in an arrogant, superior way. He just knows who he is. He never complains, even though he has such a huge responsibility. He literally has the weight of his world on his shoulders. Luckily there are six others to help share the burden. When he starts school he meets Sarah and Sam. Sarah is the most beautiful girl he's ever seen. He gets nervous around her, and it's great to see him get a bit flustered. Sarah is really nice and caring, and is the only one who makes him welcome at first. They become friends almost immediately. Then he meets Sam whose is obsessed with aliens. Sam seems like your typical nerd, but he has hidden strengths, and is ready and willing to fight for what he believes in. When Sam and Sarah learn what John is, they are shocked, but quickly get over it seeing John for who he is, their friend and someone who has protected and cares for them. Mark is the jock and school bully. When he see's Sarah take an interest in John he begins to bully him. John stands up for himself and Sam, which comes as a bit of a shock to Mark and his teammates. Henri is not happy with the goings on at school and Johns increasing feelings for Sarah. He explains the consequences of what can happen, but never pushes the issue to far. He trusts John's judgement. Henri loves John like a son, and is very proud of who he has become. He is always on guard, knowing he has to protect John at all costs. When they are discovered, and their enemies attack, they find that their friends, even enemy, are willing to help them fight. The ending is full of action, and great sadness. I even cried actual tears. I was surprised at Marks involvement, and it redeems his earlier actions. I enjoyed I Am Number Four immensely. It's written from John's point of view, and I liked the authors style of writing. I can't wait to see what they do with the movie, and what happens in the next book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fantastic story. 5/5

I Am Number Four in four words: breathless, page turning thrills.

    My confession

I have to confess my secret love of historical romances. If they have Scottish Lairds then all the better. Lately I have been devouring them with a voracious appetite. I just can't get enough! What is it about these books that has me considering selling off my siblings? Is it the feisty, strong, unconventional, progressive heroines or the arrogant, seemingly cold-hearted, alpha males? The scenery is always magnificently described, with imposing castles and lush highlands. The fashions of the time are stunning. Women wear dresses that make Gucci and Versace sound like your poor second cousin. They might comprise of several layers, but they somehow sound sexy and feminine. Men are dashing, with their waistcoats, vests, frockcoats and breeches. They take so much pride in their appearance, and I find it very appealing. Our hero is strong, virile, impossibly handsome, a rake (the immoral pleasure-seeking type, not the gardening tool) and has depths our heroine glimpses on occasion. Of course, our heroine is beautiful-in body and spirit-caring, smart, funny, and doesn't mind her own company.  Like all romances, together they're passionate, their love powerful, friends and bring out the best in each other. They go through hardships but come out of it even stronger.
Then there's the arranged marriages, female's being seen as less than males, and the view of an unmarried woman being seen with a male somehow earns them the title of 'ruined'. An effect which even spreads to their families. These are the things I don't like about historical romances. Although the heroine is against many or all of these things. They're fighting to find their way in life without the constraints of their society. Both sexes are gossipmongers. Obviously the women more so than the men. They're petty, cruel and quite vicious in their taunts. Which gives the heroine a chance to exercise her own witty and cunning mind. It's great to see our heroine come out on top. It does take our hero some time to realize what an awesome woman he has. But it's so worth the wait when he does. Not that our heroine sets out to fall in love, it creeps up on her, and surprises them both quite well. I'm a sucker for a happily ever after. I mean who isn't? It gives me hope that there still is true love still out there. Finding, though is another matter.........

Do you have a secret genre? Or what is it about romances that you find so appealing? I won't tell I promise.

    Rebecca James interview

Hello and welcome to Strange Candy Reviews YA author Rebecca James.

Hello and thank you for having me!

SCR: Rebecca, can you tell us a bit about where you grew up?
My parents moved around quite a lot when I was child so I grew up in several different places in NSW. I lived in Bourke, the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Wellington, Bathurst, Orange and Gosford. I'm not sure about the other places, as I haven't been to them in a while, but whenever I go back to the Northern Beaches I feel perfectly at home.

SCR: What is your favourite holiday spot in Australia?
I love holidaying near the beach but I'm shortly going to be moving to Port Macquarie and imagine that I'll be spending quite a bit of time there so I might start to fancy holidays in the mountains or something….

SCR: Can you tell us a little bit about your book 'Beautiful Malice'?
It's about friendship, betrayal, murder, love and family. It's about not giving up hope when life seems impossible.

SCR: What made you want to write 'Beautiful Malice'?
I wanted, initially, to write about a toxic friendship. But apart from that when I sat down to write I had no idea what was going to happen - it was a real process of discovery!

SCR: I read that your book caused quite a stir when it was submitted. How did that make you feel?
It was a really crazy and unbelievable time. I had so many rejections for Beautiful Malice at first and when I started getting all this positive publisher attention I couldn't quite believe it. At the time I wondered if the world was playing some kind of cruel trick on me…I had to pinch myself daily.

SCR: When you were writing Katherine and Alice, did their personalities ever change much from how you first thought of them?
Alice didn't change much from the way I initially imagined her but Katherine did a bit. In the first drafts I had her being too one-dimensionally nice -- in later drafts I made her more complex and after suggestions from editors I made her relationship and feelings about her sister more realistic, more complicated, less sweet and pure.

SCR: Alice's personality, to me, seems really overbearing. What is it about Alice that Katherine finds so appealing?
She is quite overbearing, isn't she! But then, I think Katherine needs someone strong like Alice to convince her to come out of her shell a little - otherwise Katherine would never meet anyone, never agree to go to a party, never have any fun. And Katherine is vulnerable, traumatised and I think when you're vulnerable you're more likely to make unwise choices...

SCR: Was it ever hard for you to put Katherine's story down, or did it just flow?
I find writing the first draft of any book quite a slow and painful process, so, yes, it was hard in that sense. But I didn't find the more difficult or confronting scenes hard to write, if that's what you mean. In fact I usually find the more emotionally dramatic and extreme scenes easier to write than the quieter ones.

SCR: What was the first thing you did once you were told your book was going to be published?
I rang my partner who was still at work and made a lot of incoherent noise down the phone. I think I may have cried a bit. And then I had several enormous glasses of champagne.

SCR: Do you have a favourite author and genre?
Not really. I like lots of different authors and genres and my favourites change, depending largely on what I'm reading at the time or what I'm in the mood for. This week I've really enjoyed reading Daniel Ducrou's The Byron Journals and Laura Buzo's Good Oil and so right now I'm thinking about those books...

SCR: If you could collaborate with anybody who would it be and why?
I don't know. I've honestly never thought about it and am not even sure if it's something I'd want to do.

    Here's some random questions:
SCR: Brad Pitt or George Clooney? George Clooney.

    SCR: Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate.

    SCR: Sweet or savoury? Savoury.

    SCR: Chinese or Italian? Chinese.
